COUNTDOWN TO EURO 2012: PUYOL TO MISS EURO 2012 WITH KNEE INJURY

World and European champion, Spain have been dealt a blow in their bid to retain their title as European champions with the news that Carles Puyol is poised to miss this summer's tournament.
The 34-year-old Barcelona captain was sidelined for three months earlier this year with knee trouble and Barca confirmed he is now expected to be out for six weeks; requiring knee surgery after experiencing discomfort following Barcelona's 4-0 defeat of Espanyol on Saturday.

Puyol is definitely out of Barca's final Primera Division game at Real Betis at the weekend and will also miss coach Pep Guardiola's last game in charge - the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao on May 25.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque is expected to announce a provisional squad on May 15 which will then be whittled down when the final party is confirmed on May 27.

The Barcelona's captain has been a reliable presence in the Spanish back line for more than a decade and has made 99 appearances for his country, scoring the winning goal in Spain's 1-0 semi-final victory against Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

His absence would likely mean that Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos partners Puyol's Barca team mate Gerard Pique in central defence at Euro 2012.
