Soccer City in Jo'burg to host opening match and final
The host cities for the 2013 Nations Cup to be hosted by 2010 world cup host, South Africa have been announced.
Minister of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula made the announcement on Friday, naming Nelspruit (Mbombela Stadium), Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium), Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng Stadium) and Durban (Moses Mabhida Stadium) as host cities.
Despite not being a host city, the 95 000-seater Soccer City in Johannesburg will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies.
Cape Town did not make the list after it refused to accept the loose nature of the financial agreement put forward by SAFA that could have seen costs spiral out of control.
The cities chosen have now opened themselves up to spiraling costs, with SAFA seeking to recoup at the very least the estimated R100-million that will be needed to fund the tournament.
