Italy won the 2006 world cup admist problems of corruption and match fixing on their domestic league same this year as they prepare for the Euros taking place in Poland and Ukraine starting June 8,2012.
The Coach of the victorious 2006 team Marcelo Lippi has compared this present squad plight to that of the 2006 team, saying: "The current situation reminds me a bit of what happened in 2006. The only advice I can give Prandelli and the players is to stay calm and try to focus on Euro 2012," Lippi stated to TG1.
"I still remember that the week at Coverciano ahead of the 2006 World Cup wasn't easy for us either. However, I think that they will be able to focus on playing football, training and the Euros again as soon as they take off for Poland."
Now,considering the upsets witnessed in major tournaments this year like Chelsea winning the champions league where the world expected a Barcelona vs Real Madrid final. Dortmund retaining the league where we expected Bayern to win after starting like a house on fire,Zambia winning the Nations cup in Africa with perhaps the youngest team ever where again the world expected a Ghana vs Ivory Coast final; All this factors put together, we can confidently say that its been a glorious year so far for the under dogs.
Looking at the favourites for the Euros the world will be quick to pick out Spain,Holland and Germany with France having an outside chance which makes Italy a massive under dog going into its Group C opener against Spain the current European Champions on June 10.
Can Italy spring a surprise against Spain and go on to win the Euros against all odds like they've always done, remember in 1994 they played in the final where they lost to Brazil after managing to qualify 3rd in a group comprising of Norway,Mexico and Rep. of Ireland.
They were never favourites in 2006 and yet they won it. So guys what do u think about the present Italy squad and their chances of winning the Euros.
