POLICE ARREST FOOTBALL FAN WHO ATTACKED GOALKEEPER


Police investigating an attack on a Shelfield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland by a fan who ran onto the pitch during a televised match have charged a 21-year-old man with assault.

Aaron Cawley, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, has been charged with assault and entering the field of play by South Yorkshire Police following Sheffield Wednesday's home match against Leeds on Friday night.


Cawley is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Monday morning. He was arrested after Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland was pushed in the face during the game at Hillsborough.

Chris Kirkland, 31, required treatment after being struck in the face during the game against Leeds United.
