He's staying: Wayne Rooney will remain at Manchester United next season, says Sir Bobby Charlton

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has insisted striker Wayne Rooney remains a 'great player' and will stay at Old trafford next season.

Rooney has been linked with a summer move to Bundesliga giant, Bayern Munich, despite Sir Alex Ferguson’s promise Rooney will remain a United player beyond the summer.

Honorary president of the German club, Franz Beckenbauer said he would be 'very, very happy if the twenty seven years old England forward decide to come to Bayern Munich', but Charlton described the speculation as 'premature'.

Speaking ahead of the Laureus World Sport awards in Rio de Janeiro, Charlton said: 'Wayne Rooney has maybe had an injury and he might not perform as well as he might have done but that’s not to say you get rid of him.

'He's a great player': Sir Bobby Charlton (right), with Sir Alex Ferguson, says United have no intention to get rid of Rooney
'Sir Alex Ferguson said he had no intentions of letting Wayne Rooney travel to anywhere and you have to abide by that, 100 per cent. He’s a great player. Why would we get rid of a great player? I think you’re being a bit premature.'
