OBAFEMI MARTINS, THE FIFTH HIGHEST EARNER IN THE MLS
Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Obafemi Martins is the fifth highest paid player in Major League Soccer for the 2013 season, according to a players’ union release.
Martins is also the highest ever paid player for Seattle Sounders with an annual basic salary of $1.6million.
The erstwhile Levante of Spain striker beat Freddie Ljungberg record of $1.3million at Seattle Sounders as highest paid player ever in the club history in 2009/2010 season.
According to a statement by MLS players’ union, Martins, who played at one time at Inter Milan and Newcastle United respectively, is on the basic wage of $1.6million per season and earn guaranteed compensation fee of $1.725million.
Former Tottenham star, Robbie Keane of Los Angeles Galaxy is the highest earner in MLS with $4million salary and $4.333million as his guaranteed compensation.
Second on the list is ex-Arsenal star Thierry Henry, who earns $3.75million and a guaranteed compensation for New York Red Bull striker is $4.35million.
Another New York Red Bull star and former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill is next with an annual wage of $3.5million with guaranteed compensation fee of $3.625million.
The fourth on the highest paid players list is Los Angeles Galaxy's Landon Donovan with an annual wage of $2.5million with a guarantee compensation fee of $2.5million.
