MORE TROUBLE FOR POWELL AND SIMPSOSN AS ITALIAN POLICE RAID THE JAMAICANS SPRINTERS HOTEL AFTER THEY FAILED DRUG TEST

Doubts: Former 100m world record holder Powell looks set to face a ban if his positive test is confirmed

Meanwhile, Italian police have confiscated drugs from the hotel where Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson are staying after they tested positive for banned stimulants.

Udine police chief Antonio Pisapia revealed that rooms of the athletes and physical trainer Christopher Xuereb of Canada were searched and that drugs were removed.

It was unclear if the drugs were legal or illicit and that the substances were being analyzed

Pisapia said that no arrests were made in the raid early Monday morning at the Fra i Pini hotel in Lignano Sabbiadoro in northeastern Italy, and that nobody has been placed under investigation.

Powell and Simpson tested positive for the stimulant oxilofrine at the Jamaican championships last month.

The substance helps athletes boost their power-to-weight ratio with more lean muscle and less fat, and so increase their speed.

Jamaican athletes have trained in Lignano for years.

It may also increase the rate at which the heart reaches its maximum performance during exercise, meaning a greater supply of oxygen can get to the muscles earlier.

Oxilofrine is an agent that stimulates part of the nervous system and was previously used to treat low blood pressure.

More recently, it has started to appear in combination with caffeine in dietary supplements marketed as weight loss products.

However, the superiority of using oxilofrine over an exercise warm-up to achieve this appears unconvincing.
