''IF YOU MOVE TO STAMFORD BRIDGE, IT WILL BE A STEP DOWN FOR YOU'' FORMER CHELSEA ASSISTANT MANAGER ADVICES ROONEY TO REMAIN IN MANCHESTER UNITED

Former Chelsea assistant manager, Ray Wilkins has told unsettled Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney that moving from Old Trafford to the Blues would be a step down for him in his career

Wilkins says that Rooney should fight with Robin van Persie to become the No 1 striker at Manchester United.

Wikkins, who played for both sides in the Seventies and early Eighties respectively, was a popular figure at Stamford Bridge during his spell as No 2 between 2008-10 but feels if Rooney leaves to London, it will be a great let down for him.

'It shouldn’t end this way, it’s getting horrible. Once you leave Manchester United there’s only one way you’re going.

'Man United are in the top three biggest clubs on the planet, therefore they will always buy and buy and buy because they always want to be successful.

'If you want to win things then there’s no better club to be at than Manchester United. So what if you’ve got a bit of competition with Robin van Persie? It’s healthy.

He should step up to the plate and show these people what he's made of. He’s got so much wonderful football left in him.'
Ray Wilkins

He added: 'If I was David Moyes there’s no way I would sell him to anyone in England. I’m sorry – he’d have to go abroad.
