On his way: Luiz Gustavo (right) played for Brazil earlier this week before joining Wolfsburg

Brazil and Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo has finally dashed Arsenal's hopes of signing him after he completed a five-year contract at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

It was reported that that the Bundeslia side were on the verge of winning the race for the defensive midfielder after holding talks with him and the deal have being completed after the Brazilian decided to remain in Germany.

Following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara and Mario Gotze at Bayern this summer, Gustavo's chances of appearing regularly this season were reduced significantly and Wolfsburg made their move a few weeks ago.

Gustavo will be unveiled at a press conference later on Friday and is hoping to earn a spot in his country's World Cup squad for next summer, goes straight into the Wolfsburg squad for their Bundesliga clash with Schalke tomorrow.

This has deepen the gloom over Arsenal as manager Arsene Wenger continues to see key transfer targets slip through his grasp.

Wenger had identified the twenty six year old as the midfield enforcer he needs weeks ago and was desperately hoping to see off competition from Wolfsburg and Rafa Benitez's Napoli for his signature.
Blow: Arsene Wenger (right) has signed just one player so far this summer

It has been a frustrating summer so far for Arsenal and Wenger, who is despaerate to prise Luis Suarez away from Liverpool and is becoming increasingly anxious about landing the recruits he needs to convince the sceptics Arsenal are ready to challenge for the title.

The Gunners were at advanced stages in negotiations over a move for former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.

But a deal for the Argentinian collapsed and Higuain moved to Napoli in a £34.5million move.

With a far bigger transfer budget than previous seasons, Arsenal looked destined to spend big this summer.

But Wenger has so far signed one player in the off-season, with France under twenty star Yaya Sanogo, joining on a free transfer from Auxerre.
