Billionaire Club! Michael Jordan Becomes First Ever Athlete To Be Ranked As A Billionaire

Jordan's (left) 89 per cent majority share in the Charlotte Hornets is now worth more than $700 million

It is official. Basketball great, Michael Jordan is the first sport athlete to be a billionaire according to a recent publication released by Forbes.

Jordan, who rewrote the record books during a glorious career playing in the NBA, is ranked the 1741st richest person on the planet.

A record 290 newcomers joined the Forbes billionaires list in the last year with the former Chicago Bulls legend among those due largely to his endorsement with sports manufacturer Nike.

According to Forbes, the Jordan brand by Nike brought in an estimated $2.25 billion in 2013, which earned the 52 year-old athlete $90 million.

Amazingly, this is mot even the source of the source of Jordan's billionaire club upliftment. it is his stake of the Charlotte Hornets that has increased his wealth immensely.

In March 2010, Jordan agreed to buy 80 per cent of the Eastern Conference side, then called the Charlotte Bobcats, at around $275m and in 2013, this share rose to 89 per cent and is now worth more than $700m.

The former Bull shooting guard is widely regarded as the sport's greatest-ever player as he became the face of Chicago during the 1990s - inspiring them to a double hat-trick of NBA titles in two separate spells.
