Djokovic, Nadal In US Open 4th Round, Kerber Continues Excellent Run

Rafael Nadal defeated Andrey Kuznetsov 6-1,6-4, 6-2 at the US Open on Friday night to advance into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

The Spanard is now into the second week of a Grand Slam event for the first time since his quarter-final finish at Roland Garros last year, where he fell to top seed Novak Djokovic .

He lost in the third round of the US Open to Fabio Fognini last year, but had reached the final in his previous three appearances.

Nadal, who has yet to drop a set in three matches in Flushing Meadows will face 22-year-old Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who rallied to beat Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets.

Pouille has dropped the first set in every one of his three matches thus far and is coming off consecutive five-set battles.

Kyle Edmund defeated 20th-seeded American John Isner at the U.S. Open for his second win over a top-25 player in three matches.

The 21-year-old Briton won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) on Friday. He was playing in the third round at a major for the first time.

Edmund, who is ranked World number and had earlier beaten 13th seed Richard Gasquet in the first round, will play Djokovic in the 4th round.

The World Number one had gotten another free pass at the U.S. Open, advancing when his third-round opponent, Mikhail Youzhny, stopped because of injury after only six games.

Djokovic, who had a walkover in the second round when Jiri Vesely conceded, was leading 4-2 when Russian Mikhail Youzhny quit with a leg problem.

For the women, Second-seed, Angelique Kerber ended 17-year-old American qualifier CiCi Bellis' stay at the U.S. Open in the third round.

Kerber, who has a chance to overtake top seed Serena Williams at No. 1 in the rankings at tournament's end, beat Bellis 6-1, 6-1 in Friday's last match in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

This was Kerber's tour-leading 50th match victory of 2016. She won the Australian Open in January for her first Grand Slam title, then was the runner-up to Williams at Wimbledon in July.

The German's best showing at Flushing Meadows was reaching the semifinals in 2011.

Kerber will face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Sunday for a quarterfinal berth.
