Nobody would have dreamt this a fortnight ago. Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko has scripted history after beating Simona Halep to win the French Open title after a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 result on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Ostapenko has now become the first ever Latvian to win a Grand Slam title.
But remarkably, she has never reached a WTA tour final prior to the tournament.
To add gloss to her achievement, she was unseeded while Halep, a perennial contender, stumbled yet again when it mattered and her wait for a major continues.
It seemed Halep might finally land her first Grand Slam title when he won the first set and went 3-0 up in the second.
However, Ostapenko produced a stunning turnaround to take the second set 6-4 before gaining a break in the third and holding on.
The youngster produced some of her best tennis under pressure and absolutely deserved to win.
But a shout out to Halep, who came so near yet so far.
